A "HUG"for their smallest patients: Flannelette blankets for preemies

The Project

When asked to help one of our local Neonatal Intensive Care Units keep their tiny babies cozy and warm - we were thrilled to be able to say, "absolutely!"

The lightweight, 100% cotton flannel blankets measure 12" x 12" and are used for a unique form of "aromatherapy" that helps the mother and premature infant bond with each other. Because the cotton flannel is able to absorb scents, the mother and baby each snuggle with one of the small blankets to "flavour" them, then they trade blankets and each benefits from the subtle, almost primitive, scent of the other - and their bond strengthens

Our Solution

In keeping with the hospital's existing motif of "Helping Us Grow" or "HUG" for short, we worked with their logo and color scheme [ web site ] to create the small blankets. Colors were carefully matched, and once printed, the hems were serged in silk thread, creating a durable seam, smooth enough to lie safely against the infant's fragile skin.
